Frank Gaudin’s four-man team Saffas was announced the winner of the annual Katanning Districts Red Card Fox Shoot for the second year in a row at the tally breakfast on Sunday. The breakfast was held at the Merriben shearing shed after two nights of shooting on February 17 and 18. Eight teams took part in the annual event, in which the Sporting Shooters Association of WA donates $5 for every fox and cat culled during the shoot to the Regional Men’s Health Initiative. The winning team — Hannes Smit, Riaan Liebenberg, Wouter van der Bank and team captain Mr Gaudin — shot 42 foxes, one cat and nine rabbits. Scott Baxter’s team was close behind with 40 foxes, four cats and five rabbits. In total, the 2023 Katanning Districts Red Card Fox Shoot culled 168 foxes, 11 cats and 32 rabbits. “The total tally was up on last year; I think we more than doubled the number — that is very good for the local fauna,” Mr Gaudin said. “It’s one of the highest tallies of cats we’ve had and we all know the impact that they have.” Tally breakfast host Katanning Landcare thanked the Katanning Lions Club for the use of its barbecue trailer.
