Unbeaten Katanning win it all at country champs

A talented group of Katanning players won the under-15 girls’ division three title at the 2020 BWA Country Championships in Perth at the weekend, completing an unbeaten weekend with grand final triumph against Denmark. With only six team members, the junior Katanning team were unstoppable as they won all six of their regular games to set up a showdown with Denmark in Sunday’s grand final. Denmark had control of the opening half as they led 14-11, but consecutive baskets from Zoe Keley to start the second half got Katanning back in front and they went on to win by 10 points at the final whistle. Keley finished with an equal game-high 12 points and she was well supported by Mischa Rodney and Sedeena Woods, who each had six points in the 38-28 result. Katanning went through the weekend undefeated, starting Saturday’s games with dominant victories over Bridgetown (37-4) and Bindoon (60-4). They then beat Denmark by eight points and finished Saturday with wins over Margaret River (49-17) and Dongara (43-14). Katanning thumped Bridgetown 49-3 in their final regular game on Sunday heading into the grand final. Woods finished the championships averaging 14.7 points a game and Keley was also a stand-out, averaging 10.4 ppg. Lynthia Coyne, Madison Taylor and Tiffany Butterworth joined Keley, Woods and Rodney in the team of six. They were coached by Lita Collard and Dionne Woods was their team manager.
