Katanning Wanderers were overrun in the last quarter by Wagin in difficult conditions as they fell to their fourth straight loss to start the 2020 Upper Great Southern Football League season. In a game where only eight majors were kicked, the Wanderers booted all three of their goals before three-quarter-time at Matera Oval. In wet and blustery conditions the visitors only trailed by two points but an inaccurate Bulldogs side finished powerfully, booting 2.7 in the final term to run out 20-point winners. The Wanderers led at quarter-time after booting the sole major of the first but that quickly turned into an eight-point deficit after the Bulldogs slammed on three goals in the second term. However, the Wanderers responded in the third as they kicked the only major score to reduce the margin back to two points and gave themselves a sniff heading into the fourth quarter. Matthew Marinoni and Daniel Macaulay both kicked two majors for the Bulldogs, who prevailed, 5.15 (45) to 3.7 (25) in the low-scoring contest. Ricky Marris, Tyrone Roe and Kerry Crosby kicked the goals for Wanderers. Ryan Pontillo, Reece Nicholson, Deklan Georgy and Mitchell Banks all worked hard for the Wanderers but could not help their side secure their first win of the season. The result leaves the Wanderers in seventh position on the ladder ahead of a clash with the bottom-placed Kukerin-Dumbleyung this Sunday in round five. A win would reignite the Wanderers’ finals hopes, given they are only two games behind the fourth-placed Boddington.
