Match-day jabs will continue at AFL games in Perth after the State Government claimed a win with its free flu jabs at the football.

But the Government is fighting a battle to meet its own vaccination targets before the worst of the winter peak hits.

State vaccination coverage currently sits at a sluggish 14.8 per cent, not yet halfway to the ambitious 40 per cent target.

The West Australian can reveal that almost 450 vaccines were administered during the three games played at Optus Stadium this month.

Fans can also get vaccinated at Friday night’s game between Fremantle and St Kilda or at any of the following four fixtures in Perth.

“We’ve seen a really encouraging response from WA footy fans, with hundreds of people taking the opportunity to get vaccinated,” Preventative Health Minister Sabine Winton said.

“By extending this initiative across more AFL games in May and June, we’re giving more Western Australians the chance to roll up their sleeves and reduce the impact of influenza this winter.”

The stadium clinics will also offer FluMist, which is a needle-free nasal spray vaccine specifically catered for children aged two to 11.

Last year was one of the worst flu seasons on record and health officials are anxious to avoid another wave of infection that could overwhelm the State’s frontline healthcare system.
