Police have launched a fresh search for a missing canoeist in Dwellingup who was last seen at the weekend.

Francis Ernest Nelson — also known as Frank — went missing early Saturday morning in the Nanga Brook area.

Rangers found the 66-year-old’s canoe and paddle floating near Bob’s Crossing on the Murray River, which flows through the Dwellingup State Forest, about 8.50am.

Mr Nelson’s car was also found parked on Murray Valley Road. He had been camping in the Nanga Brook area and was last seen leaving his campsite about 4.30am with his canoe.

A land search was suspended at 10am on Tuesday but police are still continuing to search the water.

Oolice said on Wednesday that a water search had recommenced at sunrise and would continue until sunset.

“The search is continuing with the assistance of Police Air Wing, Water Police and underwater technologies,” a police spokeswoman said.

The Dwellingup region is known for recreational activities that use its extensive forests and waterways, including hiking, camping, mountain biking, kayaking and swimming.

In winter, higher water levels create fast rapids in the upper section of the Murray River before it begins to recede in spring and summer.

Anyone with information about Mr Nelson is urged to call WA Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
