Wagin Trots president Kevin Spurr looking forward to celebrating 100-year milestone with historic event

Wagin Trotting Club will celebrate its 100-year anniversary on Sunday with a stack of activities set to complement an action-packed day of racing. The day will feature eight races with general proceedings set to kick off at noon. Entertainment, food and drink will be provided with cash prizes also on offer. Wagin Trotting Club president Kevin Spurr said he was looking forward to the historic event. “We will open at midday and we’re expecting to have eight races on the day and the first race is scheduled for 2pm,” he said. “Along with that we have an outdoor set-up with a bar and some businesses, as well as an outdoor entertainment area with a singer. “As far as everything else, we’re trying to make it a real family day with ice-cream available and there will be a magician as well. “Downderry Wines will be there with free wine tasting and we’ll be selling their products over the bar.” “We’ve also got memorabilia too from over the years, there was a champion horse that came out of Wagin called Royal Force and the people involved there are bringing down the Fremantle Cup. “He won the Miracle Mile back in the 1970s so all of those people involved in that will be coming down with all sorts of old memorabilia.” Mr Spurr said there would be cash prizes awarded to the best dressed punters on the day. “We have something called hot to trot which is awarded to the best looking gentleman and lady where $200 is available each,” he said. “If it’s a couple, there will be $500 available. We really encourage people to get dressed up during the day and come along and enjoy it for what it is. “Basically we just wanted to make it a really big celebration and a chance to have a Christmas party kind of atmosphere. “We ran a three-year-old series last Friday night so we have a final for that on the day and we’ll be offering a $5000 trophy for the winner.” “All in all it should be fabulous day out.”
