Freight train carriage obliterated by fire as flames spotted near Perth Airport

Drivers were confronted with wild scenes Monday night as a raging fire took hold of a freight train carriage near Perth Airport.

The burning carriage was reported by a member of the public who spotted it at the Great Eastern Highway bypass bridge in Hazelmere about 10pm on Monday.

A witness reported the train came to a complete stop as fire crews worked to extinguish the flames.

The carriage, with unknown contents, was completely destroyed.

Eight crews of career firefighters from Kiara, Midland, Osborne Park and Welshpool attended and contained the fire by 10.27pm.

A DFES spokesperson said the train was carrying general commodities including olive oil.

They said the cause of the fire was undetermined but it had been deemed non-suspicious.
