Residents told to ‘stay inside’ as potentially dangerous smoke from house fire pollutes suburbs

Residents in Perth’s south east have been urged to stay indoors after a house fire broke out overnight, polluting the air with potentially dangerous smoke.

The blaze was reported Friday morning about 1.34am on Bundalla Court in Kelmscott, in the Armadale council area, at a single-storey house.

Heavy hazardous smoke was being blown towards the nearby Tonkin Highway, DFES said.

Nine crews attended the fire, which spread into the brick and tin home’s roof space.

The blaze was extinguished by 4.40am.

Hours after the fire started, DFES issued precautionary directions for people in the area to “remain inside, out of the smoke or fumes, with doors and windows closed”.

The warning also stated that air conditioners should be turned off and people should avoid the area.

“If you are already in the area take advice from emergency services personnel. People with medical concerns should contact their local doctor or call 1800MEDICARE,” DFES said.

The cause of the fire was not known as of 6am on Friday with DFES fire investigation officers at the scene Friday morning.
