Derby man charged after WA detectives discover bag of meth hidden inside his McMuffin

A breakfast burger has become an unlikely piece of evidence after police in WA’s north uncovered a shocking addition hidden inside.

WA Police have released jaw-dropping footage capturing the moment Broome detectives discovered a man had allegedly hidden a bag of methamphetamine inside a Bacon and Egg McMuffin from McDonald’s.

The body-cam video, which quickly gained attention after being shared on social media, shows officers searching through a paper bag of fast food before discovering the illicit breakfast item.

Upon learning the savoury snack was carrying something far more illegal, the officers were seen laughing in shock.

The unusual discovery was shared ahead of a new podcast episode from WA Police Confidential that was released on Thursday.

During the episode, Senior Constable Ben Lucas from Broome Detectives told podcast hosts Claire Ciantar, Mya Grieve and Sgt Nate Gilmour that the wild find came as a result of an ongoing police operation.

Police had been observing an address of interest in West Kimberley when they noticed a man entering the property before leaving a short time later — which is when police decided to stop the car.

“Police from the Broome Detective Office conducted a vehicle stop a number of streets away and the occupants in the vehicle were subjected to a search,” Const. Lewis told the podcast.

“The search of the vehicle was commenced and a bag of hot, fresh Chicken Treat was located on the rear floor between the drivers and passenger’s side of the vehicle.”

While inspecting the bag, detectives discovered an unusual find — a cold McMuffin had been crammed inside the bottom of the bag, arousing suspicion from the searching officers.

“It was when it was unwrapped that (McMuffin), it was found to contain a clip-sealed bag containing methamphetamine,” the officer said.

“We found approximately three and a half grams of methamphetamine secreted between the Bacon and Egg McMuffin.”

The search took place in the afternoon — a detail that podcast host Sgt Nate Gilmour flagged as ‘immediately suspicious’ given that the fast food giant ceases sales from their breakfast menu at 10.30am.

Constable Lewis confirmed on the show that it was arguably the weirdest place he had found drugs through his entire policing career.

“It caught us all by surprise,” he said.

A 39-year-old Derby man was arrested on August 20 over the odd discovery and charged with possession of a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply.

An adult woman also in the vehicle at the time of the search was released after being questioned by law enforcement.

The man is due to appear in court on September 9 over the incident.
