Aboriginal leaders dedicated to improving justice outcomes are encouraged to step up

The next wave of Australians focused on improving justice outcomes for Aboriginal people are being sought. Expressions of interest are officially open for Indigenous Australians from regional WA to join the Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee for 2026. Established in 2021, the committee is comprised of 12 community members from different regions across WA, who each share their lived experiences to culturally advise and guide the Department of Justice. Attorney General Tony Buti said the committee was essential for ensuring Aboriginal communities across the State were considered and understood when making justice-related decisions and he encouraged people to add their voice. “Throughout the past term, AJAC has been instrumental in enhancing stakeholder relationships and deepening the department’s connection with Aboriginal communities,” he said. “By embedding cultural knowledge and lived experience into policy development, AJAC has helped ensure our justice system is more responsive, inclusive, and accountable. “I encourage Aboriginal leaders from across WA to consider applying. “Your voice is essential to continuing the progress we’ve made and drive meaningful change in justice outcomes.” Aboriginal people from the Goldfields are among the communities being urged to sit on next year’s table, along with those from the West Kimberley, East Pilbara, Gascoyne, Mid West, North Metropolitan, South West and Great Southern regions. Those interested must attend a minimum of four meetings per calendar year and comply with the committee’s Terms of Reference and Code of Conduct.
