The next generation of the East Kimberley’s most talented Aboriginal artists will have their work on show in Perth this month as part of a new exhibition.

The Boonkaj exhibition will showcase contemporary art from 15 Waringarri and Kira Kora artists, highlighting practices across a range of different mediums with a focus on themes of country and culture.

Exhibition curator Sandra Murray said Boonkaj was a celebration of the the vibrancy of Aboriginal art, planned with the intent of platforming new and emerging artists.

“I am focusing on artists who have not had the opportunity — or rarely — to exhibit in Perth,” she said.

“Boonkaj will be offering the chance to engage in an exhibition that has a social purpose to encourage and support rising Indigenous artists.”

Waringarri Aboriginal Arts Gallery co-ordinator Leana Collier said local artists, including Richard Bloomer, Anita Churchill, Jerita Mengil and Dora Griffiths, were excited to be involved in the project.

“We are pleased to work with curator Sandra Murray who, with undaunted vision to support the emergence of new artistic voices, presents our next generation of Kimberley artists to Perth audiences,” she said.

The exhibition will be open at Flux Gallery from May 15 to June 26.
