It’s been a slow start to the long weekend getaway mission with a spate of crashes and heavy congestion causing long delays on Perth roads on Friday.

Clean-up crews were on-site to control a fuel spill in Rockingham after a fuel tanker rolled just after midday.

DFES issued a hazmat alert after 1pm following the fuel spill which closed Mandurah Road and Dixon Road.

There were no injuries to the driver or any other road users, but drivers were urged to avoid the area.

Kwinana Freeway was also experiencing heavy delays from 1.30pm, with drivers keen to hit the road to start the long weekend early.

The delays followed a morning of traffic chaos around Perth on Friday, starting with a crash on Ellen Stirling Boulevard at Oswald Street in Innaloo — involving a white Subaru driven by a 20-year-old Mirrabooka man and a Toyota Camry turning into Westfield Innaloo.

There was then a vehicle rollover on Armadale Road eastbound at Wright Road in Piara Waters which triggered lane closures.

Then, just before 11am, motorists were delayed when a crash on Kwinana Freeway northbound near Thomas Road reduced the freeway to a single lane.
