Perth traffic: TransPerth offers range of travel options for Ed Sheeran concert attendees
TransPerth is keen to help Ed Sheeran fans avoid the ‘bad habits’ of other drivers, with the public transport authority scheduling extra services throughout the weekend.
The global pop superstar will be returning to Perth to perform two massive nights at Optus Stadium this weekend as part of his Loop Tour.
Lucky ticket holders to the anticipated event have been blessed with free public transport included with their ticket purchase, which is valid for three hours before and after the concert.
Trains on the Armadale and Thornlie-Cockburn lines will make stops at Perth Stadium Station throughout the day, with direct trains operating on the Yanchep and Mandurah lines before and after each show.
Trains on the direct Fremantle line will only operate post-show.
Replacement buses will be operating between Midland and Bassendean stations due to a partial line shutdown, but train services will resume from Bassendean onwards.
The Suburban Event Bus Network will run between 4pm and 7pm on both Saturday and Sunday, as well as for 45 minutes after the concert’s conclusion.
The Red CAT will also be operating, taking concertgoers from West Perth via Perth CBD to Matagarup Bridge.
With Frontier Touring expecting the singer to host crowds upwards of 55,000 for each concert, Main Roads WA has warned there will be increased congestion in the area.
“Motorists should allow for extra travel time especially during afternoon peak as delays are expected. If in the stadium precinct be aware of heavy foot traffic and frequently stopping vehicles,” a spokesperson said.
A TransPerth spokesperson warned passengers that services are expected to be busy this weekend.
“If you’d like to sit back with your eyes closed while someone else does the driving or photograph the scenery as it whirls by your train or bus window, Transperth has you covered,” she said.
“On top of the special event buses we always put on for weekend events of this size at Optus, direct trains from Perth, Mandurah and Yanchep will drop you right at Perth Stadium Station before the show, and extra trains will be running to get people to and from the venue as quickly as possible.
“Tens of thousands of Ed Sheeran fans are expected to catch public transport on both nights, and we encourage passengers to plan your journey, allow extra time to reach your destination and please be patient.”
Sheeran will be supported locally by Aussie artists Vance Joy and Mia Wray, as well Irish all-female group BIIRD.
Following the busy weekend in Perth, Sheeran will perform three shows each in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, concluding his Aussie tour with a single performance in Adelaide on March 5.
