Perth weather: WA set to be battered by more rain and cold temperatures as winter sets in

VideoA severe weather system is forecast to hit Perth and surrounding areas from Geraldton to Albany, bringing winds up to 125 kilometres per hour and conditions similar to a Category 3 cyclone.

Residents in Perth and across WA will wake up to more rain on Thursday with a cold weather front expected to sweep the coast.

Temperatures in Perth will struggle to climb to 17C as rain continues to drench the city.

Forecasters say there is a high chance Perth will receive at least 10mm of rain, with the possibility of falls reaching 25mm.

Bureau of Meteorology’s Ilana Cherny explained that more storms were on their way across the greater region.

“A significant cloud band will bring a lot of moisture in ahead of a cold front moving in later through the day,” Ms Cherny said.

“That’s going to bring some rain and storms across from the western Pilbara all the way down through the south-west.

“The heaviest rainfalls are expected through the Gascoyne and Central West region. In those areas we could see some severe thunderstorms with heavy falls.”

The Bureau is warning travellers to be aware of the conditions, describing the rainfall in the area as “unseasonable”.

The wet weather is set to ease on Friday before improving on Saturday, with a dry start to the weekend currently forecast.

It comes just days after a heavy downpour of rain caused a Perth shopping centre ceiling to collapse.

Rain above Rockingham Centre, about 50km south of Perth, proved too much for the Jim Kidd store’s roof, which began spurting out water at about 3.15pm on Monday.

A shopper filmed as multiple leaks across the ceiling saw water pouring onto the floor, creating puddles throughout the store.
