A tsunami warning has been issued in Japan’s northeast following a terrifying 7.4-magnitude earthquake.
Authorities have warned that waves up to three metres tall could hit the coast within the next hour.
Areas of the coast of central Pacific Hokkaido, Aomori prefecture and Iwate prefecture are tipped to be battered the worst, according to the country’s meteorological agency.
Local media, NHK news, has reported that locals have been told to “evacuate immediately”, following the earthquake which was recorded at 4.53pm local time (3.53pm AWST).
The tremor was strong enough to be felt hundreds of miles away in Tokyo, according to local media.
People in the area are being urged to move to higher ground and follow official guidance.
