Pope Leo has been diagnosed with lung cancer after undergoing surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, the Vatican has announced.

In a medical update following the 90-minute procedure, the Vatican confirmed tests had identified lung adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer.

Doctors had suspected the diagnosis following preoperative examinations, with the surgery confirming their findings.

“The surgery was successful, and there were no complications,” the statement said.
