Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen has ruled out dipping into Russian fuel supplies as the conflict in the Middle East continues.
Addressing the media on Saturday, Mr Bowen was asked for his views on a fuel trade agreement between Russia and the United States.
President Donald Trump this week revealed he had come to an arrangement for Russia to supply the US with 1.8 million tonnes of diesel as prices soar amid the conflict with Iran.
But Mr Bowen emphatically ruled out following suit.
“We don’t need or want Russian fuel in Australia,” he said.
“We have arrangements in place as best we possibly can with our trading partners to ensure that Russian fuel does not flow in Australia.”
Ruling out a similar trade agreement, Mr Bowen took personal aim at the Russian president.
“We do not want Vladimir Putin to benefit from this war in the Middle East,” he said.
“What the United States does is a matter for them, but we won’t be changing our approach.
“We continue to have a very, very firm view that Russia should not be rewarded for their illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine by any arrangements put in place.
“We have our policy and it is very clear.”
Meanwhile, with diesel prices having recently eclipsed the $2 mark once again as the US-Iran conflict rumbles on, Mr Bowen confirmed the status of Australian fuel supplies in the face of supply disruption.
“Australia has 43 days worth of petrol, which is two days more than my update last week,” he said.
“We have 31 days worth of diesel, one day less than last week, and we have 30 days of jet fuel.
“We have 51 ships on the way to Australia with fuel and we have 3.2bn litres of various fuel locked in and scheduled to be delivered over the next four weeks.”
He said the continued supply should give Aussies “reassurance” over availability at the bowsers.
“We are working very closely with trading partners in South-East Asia and beyond and with our domestic refiners to ensure they are working at full pelt and in the longer term building Australia’s sovereign capabilities.”
