Training Minister Simone McGurk to raise cap of WA’s skilled migrant allocation at meeting with counterparts

A push to overturn the Federal Government’s decision to slash WA’s nominated skilled migrant intake by 70 per cent is set to be raised at a Perth meeting with skills ministers from across the country. Training Minister Simone McGurk will on Friday tell her State and Territory counterparts that WA was disappointed the migrant cap was made with no prior consultation or forward planning to be reviewed. Premier Roger Cook has written to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, requesting him to backflip on the cuts to the program — which has gone from 8140 spots in 2022-23 to just 2350 in this financial year. This is despite the State grappling with a skills shortages crisis and an unemployment rate reaching 3.4 per cent in July. Demand for spots in WA’s migrant intake was so high that more than 8000 were snapped up in just nine months in the past financial year. “This decision needs to be overturned. The work is here in WA right now — and while we are investing heavily in training local workers, skilled migration is absolutely vital to get people into homes and infrastructure built,” Ms McGurk told The West Australian. “We have had a constructive relationship with this Federal Government and we want it to continue. “WA is the engine room of the economy, and it’s critical that WA industries and employers have access to the skilled workforce they need to support growth and investment and deliver benefits for all Australians.” Skills and Training Minister Brendan O’Connor will lead the meeting in Fremantle on Friday, ahead of the Prime Minister taking his entire Cabinet to Perth on Monday, which will also be attended by WA outer ministry members. Friday’s meeting will focus on progressing negotiations on a National Skills Agreement to tackle widespread skills shortages. In WA, data from Jobs and Skills Australia shows more than 5000 mining-based jobs are advertised every month. The State also takes an above-average share of national job ads for clean energy occupations as the country moves to achieve a 43 per cent emissions reductions target by 2023 and net zero by 2050. This includes automotive electricians at 30 per cent of jobs advertised around the nation, electrical engineering draftspersons and technicians at 29 per cent, and structural steel and welding trade workers at 27 per cent. The clean energy sector is expected to generate about 350,000 jobs in WA by 2050. “Clean energy industries are the future for our workers and the opportunities are endless,” Mr O’Connor said. “We will see more demand in WA and right across the country for many traditional trades — not just electricians but also electrical distribution trades workers working on rewiring the nation and mechanical engineering trades constructing new solar and wind power sites. “There will also be expanding demand for engineers across a range of fields — electrical engineers as well as civil, mining, chemical, environmental and production engineers.” The WA Government will convene an Energy Transition Summit later this year, bringing together key players to leverage job opportunities in the global push to decarbonise.
