WA farmers launch ‘keep the sheep’ campaign to knock off live exports ban

Farmers, shearers, truckies and regional WA community leaders are banding together to put marginal Labor MPs on notice that ending live sheep exports will kill regional towns – and they won’t go down quietly. Their “keep the sheep” campaign launches on Thursday, the same day the Government will introduce legislation to ban the export trade by May 2028. The ban will disproportionately affect WA. A truck convoy expected to attract 1300 vehicles will descend on Perth from four directions during peak hour on Friday to protest the end of the industry. The campaign’s initial goal is to raise $220,000 for advertising in marginal Labor seats in WA, where the Government needs to hold on to every gain it made at the 2022 election. They want city voters to know the harm they say the ban will do to country towns and families. Truck driver Ben Sutherland, vice-president of the Livestock and Rural Transport Association of Western Australia, estimated the “woeful decision” by government meant his own business would take a 40 per cent hit once exports were phased out. “That equates to (losing) a driver in our system, which is another person out of the local community, a small community, not spending his money at the supermarket, at the local hotel at the sporting complex,” he said. “It affects us for sporting communities … I spend up to $8000 to $10,000 a year on sponsorship. That won’t be happening anymore. “It’s just another knife in the back for the rural community, really.” A video ad being launched with the campaign features livestock agents and buyers, shearers, salesyard managers and farmers talking about the impact they anticipate on their communities. The Government has promised a $107 million support package to help sheep producers and the supply chain, including expanding domestic sheep processing facilities, fostering the chilled meat trade and funding community wellbeing activities and rural financial counsellors. Agriculture Minister Murray Watt said the aim was ultimately to invest in the Australian sheep industry with more onshore processing and more value-adding. He said live exports had plummeted over the past 20 years while sheep meat exports “are going through the roof” with Australia now the global leader with $4.5 billion of exports last year. “We have taken our time to listen to all views and get this right,” he said. “Nevertheless, with a timeframe in place and money on the table, farmers and supply-chain participants can now plan with confidence for the future.” WAFarmers president John Hassell, a grain and sheep farmer at Pingelly in the Wheatbelt, said the Federal Government’s $107 million “transition package” was an insult. “We need to send a very strong message to government that they are putting a knife into rural Australia,” he said. “We have to send the message that they cannot muck with us like this without consequences — and all for a cheap, nasty, dirty little backroom deal with the Animal Justice Party.” Redbridge pollster Kos Samaras said the decisions like ending the live export trade alienated truck owner-drivers in particular, who tended to live in the outer suburban seats Labor had to hang on to, like Swan and Hasluck. “They’re not in a position where they could begin to alienate particular constituencies, especially Western Australia, which was so critical for a majority government in 2022,” he told The West. “So they’ve got to make a choice: is a decision like this worth minority government?” Chief organiser of Friday’s trucking rally Paul Brown said the controversial policy had united the entire agriculture sector in a way he had never seen. “We were once a well-respected industry by government. We are now regarded a poor, distant, second cousin when it comes to policy development,” he said. “They’d rather advocate for small activist groups and cheap inner-city votes on the east coast.” Labor first committed to phasing out sheep exports in 2018, taking the policy to two federal elections. Some independent MPs such as Andrew Wilkie have been pushing for an end to live exports since 2011. The Coalition has vowed to overturn the ban if it wins office.
