Perth CEO Michelle Reynolds suspended as problem-plagued council put ‘on notice’

The West Australian understands City of Perth chief executive Michelle Reynolds has been suspended, as the council is formally put on notice over allegations of dysfunction — described by one State Government minister as “diabolical”. The problem-plagued council headed by Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds was addressed on Tuesday night by Local Government inspector Tony Brown, and warned stronger action would be taken if significant improvements were not made. “I can tell you, people in the city of Perth have had enough. It’s diabolical,” Planning Minister John Carey told reporters on Wednesday. “The elected councils have to take responsibility, and it is a cause of concern that the inspector was there yesterday seeking to take further action. “I will have to leave it to the Inspector to make any further comment, but I will say this: no wonder ratepayers are tearing out their hair. I’m over it. The pettiness, the infighting, the immaturity by the council is galling.” Two seperate sources have told The West that Ms Reynolds has been suspended. Bruce Reynolds has been contacted for comment. The pair are not related. It could be deja vu for ratepayers after the City of Perth council was previously suspended, and ultimately sacked, just six years ago. “I expect the City of Perth elected council to do everything they can to improve their capability and performance,” Mr Brown said. “I am monitoring the City of Perth closely and will take further action if needed.” Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley said the formal notice prompted the council to convene a special meeting aimed at addressing the concerns raised. “As our capital city local government, my expectation is that they provide a leading example of good governance and display exemplary conduct. Unfortunately, this has not been the case,” Ms Beazley said. “It is now evident that local government needs a reset.” The latest scrutiny comes after reports emerged that a committee of five councillors, including the Lord Mayor and deputy mayor David Goncalves, sought to expand travel, accommodation and hospitality entitlements funded by ratepayers although administration had strongly advised against.
