WAFL colts: Claremont draft prospect Sam Gilbey hurt, sons of guns Ed Allan, Corey Tregenza-Cashell star

A highly-touted West Australian draft prospect has suffered a serious leg injury in Claremont’s colts win on Saturday. Sam Gilbey launched himself above a pack inside defensive 50 in the third quarter of Claremont’s win over Perth, but landed awkwardly on his left leg. The AFL Academy talent was helped from the ground and taken to hospital in an ambulance, with scans revealing a fractured tibia which means season over and a delayed start to 2023. The 18-year-old utility was playing just his fourth game for the Tigers this year after battling glandular fever in recent weeks and getting COVID during the national under-18s carnival. The Tigers kept their slim colts finals hopes alive with a 7.12 (54) to 3.6 (24) win over the Demons, anchored by son-of-a-gun Ed Allan. The son of inaugural Fremantle captain Ben improved his own draft chances with 19 kicks from his 27 disposals, seven tackles and a goal. Taite Clark, the brother of Dockers runner Jordan, kicked his first goal in colts football, but the Demons hit the board just twice more as they were mathematically ruled out of the finals race. At Mandurah’s Lane Group Stadium, Peel Thunder twin towers Jackson Broadbent and Corey Tregenza-Cashell put on a show in a comfortable win over fellow top-five outfit South Fremantle. Broadbent had a point to prove after missing out on a national draft combine invitation, booting three goals to go with 34 hit-outs, 12 disposals and five marks. His State 18s teammate Tregenza-Cashell, the son of goal-kicking legend Rod Tregenza, kicked a game-high five majors to be the main man up forward as the second-placed Thunder recorded their 10th win of the season. Running machine Clay Hall kicked goal of the day from the boundary and another in the third to go with 14 disposals, while fellow exciting bottom-aged talent Mitch Edwards (17 disposals and 27 hit-outs), defender Michael Sellwood (27 disposals and five marks) and midfielder Scott Tuia (22 and nine tackles) also stood out. Seth Connor tried hard in a losing cause for the Bulldogs, finishing with the most possessions on the ground (30). In the first game of the round, Subiaco overcame a slow start to defeat Leederville Oval co-tenants East Perth by 41 points. West Coast Next Generation Academy talent Tyrell Dewar kicked a game-high three goals and fellow Goldfields talent and State 16s jet Malakai Champion added two alongside 2023 prospect Koltyn Tholstrup and midfielder Jack Gouge. Gouge also had 16 disposals and seven tackles in a well-rounded performance. Darcy Miller (20 disposals and a goal), Daniel Moore (18, seven tackles and a goal) and Alexio Yiannakis (14 and two goals) were among the Royals’ best.
