Peter Sumich’s 2023 season ratings, part II: Every Fremantle Docker and West Coast Eagle ranked

Peter Sumich continues his must-read worst-to-best ratings countdown of Fremantle and West Coast’s players for season 2023, with today’s second part featuring those ranked 50-36. CATCH UP ON PART I (players 64-51) HERE 50: Josh Corbett (Fremantle) Average rating: 3.8 Games played: 5 Showed something late in the season, playing the last five games. Next year will be a huge one for him to see if he can lock down a spot in the 22. 49: Jack Petruccelle (West Coast) Average rating: 3.89 Games played: 18 Showed some great signs when moved to the midfield, but really couldn’t be consistent in finding the ball, which is something for him to look at over the pre-season with his coaches. Speed in the midfield, that’s his one wood. 48: Will Brodie (Fremantle) Average rating: 4 Games played: 5 Didn’t really get a chance to prove himself. The coach and match committee must see something in his footy they don’t like – the only thing I can think off is his defensive game. He doesn’t put enough pressure on the opposition when they have the ball. 47: Ryan Maric (West Coast) Average rating: 4 Games played: 10 The mid-season pick-up was thrown into the deep end of AFL football after a couple of WAFL games and he seemed to handle his first few games OK, with some nice marks and set shot goals. He probably needs to find a few tricks over the pre-season to add to his game so he can be a regular starter. He has an upside, but we won’t know much until next year. 46: Reuben Ginbey (West Coast) Average rating: 4 Games played: 17 Showed enough to say he is going to be a very good player. Still raw in some areas of his game so some good development in his areas of need will be important. Speed kicking on his non preferred foot is one thing he should be working on. 45: Andrew Gaff (West Coast) Average rating: 4.05 Games played: 22 Had a poor start to the season where things just didn’t work for him. He looked slow and his kicking was way off what he normally produces. He should have been dropped but a sub role in one of the games seemed to spark him into action. From there he was a very good player for the rest of the season for his side. 44: Neil Erasmus (Fremantle) Average rating: 4.07 Games played: 14 Lots to like about him. He needs the pre-season to build his body and game up. He is young and has a good 12 years or more ahead of him. 43: Sam Sturt (Fremantle) Average rating: 4.14 Games played: 14 Good end to the year, but needs to find something extra over the pre-season, like working on defence and the mental side of the game to be more consistent so he can grab a regular spot in the side. 42: Jamaine Jones (West Coast) Average rating: 4.15 Games played: 13 Looked like he was going to have a great year off half-back but then he got injured, which derailed his form and year. When he did come back, he didn’t look the same player. As all the Eagles, his pre-season is the key. 41: Nathan O’Driscoll (Fremantle) Average rating: 4.2 Games played: 10 Was OK, but lost his way during the middle part of the year. Liam Henry took his place on the wing and he never got it back. I still think he has a bright future with the club. 40: Elijah Hewett (West Coast) Average rating: 4.21 Games played: 14 Another young player who needs to have a pre-season where he can learn his craft in the midfield and target a few areas to work on – skills under pressure and ground balls to name a few. 39: Nat Fyfe (Fremantle) Average rating: 4.22 Games played: 9 Confusing year really – was playing forward for the whole year at the start of the AFL season. Now we are told he is a midfielder next year. Nat, just get your body right, that’s the main thing for next year, everything else will take care of itself. 38: Tom Barrass (West Coast) Average rating: 4.29 Games played: 14 Indifferent year, could not put a string of games together. Injuries cost him 10 games in the season. He is a vital part of the club and is in his prime at 27 years old. Pre-season, like so many others, will be the key. 37: Michael Frederick (Fremantle) Average rating: 4.32 Games played: 19 I do like him, but he needs to find some consistency in his game. He played on the wing in the last game against the Hawks and this might be the go for him, as his pace can be used more in the spaces of the wing position. 36: Brady Hough (West Coast) Average rating: 4.33 Games played: 15 I like him, should be a starting 18 player from next year onwards. Building his body up to handle 23 rounds of AFL over the pre-season will be important for him. ON WEDNESDAY: THE COUNTDOWN CONTINUES WITH PLAYERS RANKED 35-21
