Two-time WNBL championship coach Chris Lucas will leave Geelong Venom after their clash against the UC Capitals, but is keeping the door open for a return to the competition.

Ahead of the Venom's clash against Canberra at the AIS Arena on Saturday, Lucas said he will take a break from the league after deciding not to renew his contract in December.

Lucas has coached for 18 WNBL seasons, racking up more than 400 games in charge.

The 2018/2019 Coach of the Year made 13 finals series, winning the competition with Townsville in 2014/2015 and 2015/2016.

This season injuries have cruelled Geelong's chances of helping Lucas finish his tenure on a high.

The Venom are sixth on the ladder with seven wins and 15 losses, and their clash against Canberra is their last of the season.

However, victory against the Capitals would enable Geelong to finish their campaign with three consecutive victories.

"It wasn't an easy decision," Lucas said before the match.

"It's the right thing for me right now, and I still want to coach if the opportunity presents itself.

"Right now it's important for me to head home and spend some time with my family."

At halftime of Saturday's match, the Capitals had a narrow 35-33 lead.
