Perth Scorchers have added former Big Bash League cult hero Andre Fletcher to their squad for the upcoming Global Super League in Guyana, where they will compete for their share of a $1 million prize pool.

Fletcher, who made a huge impression for Melbourne Stars in the 2020/21 season, will cover for the absences of Aaron Hardie and New Zealand’s Mark Chapman, both of whom have withdrawn due to personal reasons.

The top-order batter — who is nicknamed ‘The Spiceman’ — found runs hard to come by throughout his sole campaign in the BBL, managing only 206 across his 12 appearances.

But he quickly emerged as a fan favourite, producing highlights including a stunning no-look six on his debut against Brisbane Heat and a pair of stunning catches to help his side to a win over Hobart Hurricanes.

The 38-year-old has also played in Twenty20 leagues in the Caribbean, England, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, United States and Canada and has made 60 international short-form appearances for West Indies.

As a Grenadian, he will be familiar with conditions at Providence Stadium, where the entire 10-day tournament will be staged.

The Scorchers XI will begin their GSL campaign at 10pm WA time on Thursday night against Pakistan Super League outfit Lahore Qalandars.

They will then take on Major League Cricket’s San Francisco Unicorns on Sunday, the UAE’s Desert Vipers next Wednesday and the Caribbean Premier League’s Guyana Amazon Warriors next Thursday.

Of the five teams competing in the competition, the side which finishes on top of the pool stage’s ladder will progress directly to next Sunday’s final against the winner of a second-versus-third qualifier.

Perth was given an invite to the third edition of the tournament due to their status as the reigning BBL title-holders.

Their side will be coached by WA cricket legend Simon Katich and features stars Ashton Turner, Ashton Agar Jhye Richardson.
