There’s nothing but purple everywhere you look in Fremantle — and tens of thousands of fans are hoping the party is just beginning.

The porty city’s cappuccino strip has been transformed into the ultimate open-air grand final watch party for Dockers supporters not flying to Melbourne, with footy fever set to completely take over the streets.

The main street was closed to the public from Friday in preparations for today’s free festivities, which will see a number of large screens placed so nuffies don’t miss a moment, while nearby bars, cafes and restaurants will be spilling out onto the road, making for a festival-like atmosphere.

And with a number of ticketed and pub events being held across the area, tens of thousands are expected to pack out the city — and party through the night should they win, if the scenes from Fremantle after the Dockers’ preliminary final win that went viral are anything to go by.

Many diehards are heading to a sold-out Fremantle Oval event, where around 10,000 people can catch the game on the big screen at the team’s old training ground.

Pubs, bars and restaurants are also preparing for one of the biggest days on the AFL calendar.

At The Federal Hotel, organisers are expecting about 2,000 supporters to pack into the venue, with an estimated 20,000 pints set to be poured across the day.

The venue has also stocked up with an additional 250 kegs ahead of the clash.

The venue will also feature a tattoo pop-up from 10am, a Crooked Colours DJ set from 11.30am to 12.30pm and another DJ set after the final siren.

Meanwhile, Metropolis Fremantle is also gearing up for a full-day Grand Final viewing party from 10am, with the game live on big screens alongside food and drink specials, music and entertainment and a full venue takeover.

On Friday, the Freo fever had already taken over - everywhere you looked, punters were dressed in the iconic deep purple.

For those who didn’t yet have their merch, there were no excuses, with a Fremantle Dockers merchandise truck parked in the heart of town, which has sold more than $70,000 of apparel already this week.

Local chef Sam Nancarrow, who was purchasing an extra cap before Saturdays big game, said hes been feeling anxious in the lead up.

“I’ve been a member since birth” he said, “I’m feeling stressed, I’ve been having nightmares all week”

As locals popped in and out of shops, and went to the pub for their Friday lunch, something larger was catching their eye.

The giant mural of Dockers darlings, Andrew Brayshaw, Caleb Serong and Alex Peirce graced the walls above the former Sailing for Oranges building on South Terrace.

No Blank Walls artist Callan Stals-Clifford is one of three on the small team bunkering down to get the artwork done in time.

He said a phone call on Monday pulled him and the team from Fitzroy back home to get the mural done as soon as possible.

“We were so stoked to get the call up, but trying to get the scale done in four days has been a challenge in itself” he said.

Mr Stals-Clifford said he and the team has been motivated by the positive feedback from the community.

“It’s been such a good feeling, and the amount of feedback we’ve had just from the public, it’s been overwhelming.

“Everyone’s tooting their horns, yelling out, ‘Go Freo!’ It’s been great, and sort of giving us that extra drive to get it done.”

Into the early afternoon, the positive energy continued to build as fans queued to snap photos in front of a giant balloon mural at the entrance to the Fremantle Markets.

Tenielle Walker and her two children, Taj, 5, and Harper, 7, were among the hundreds soaking up the atmosphere.

Ms Walker says their young family will be heading down to the live watch parties on Saturday to watch the game with friends.

Fremantle mega-fan Helena Galas, co-owner of Terrace Men’s Wear, has adorned the shopfront with a replica trophy in hopes of bringing some extra luck to the Dockers.

“We are all Fremantle born and bred, been in business for 45-years” she said.

“We are so nervous but hoping we can bring it home - theres been great vibes in town, everyone has really gotten behind it”

Even four-legged-friends were getting into the spirit.

Seven-year-old Kelpie Smoko enjoyed trotting up and down the street, decked out in her Fremantle Dockers scarf - attracting lots pets and extra attention.

On top of the main screen on South Terrace, additional large TVs will also be placed at Walyalup Koort, Esplanade Park and the corner of Market and High Streets, giving fans a number of options to catch the game around the city.

Public transport will be free for all users on Saturday, with Transperth also putting on extra train services on the Fremantle Line.

The organisation encouraged users to leave early to get to the city on time.

Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti said West Australians should enjoy the day and get behind the local side.

“We’re putting the “Free” in “Freo” this grand final Weekend,” she said.

“It’s going to be an incredible day, we know Fremantle will be packed and we want everyone to have fun and stay safe.
