UGSFL 2024: Williams claim top spot with superb 45-point win over Narrogin, Brookton-Pingelly upset Boddington

Williams leapfrogged Boddington to claim top spot in the Upper Great Southern Football League after a commanding 45-point defeat of Narrogin on Saturday. The Cats took the game by the scruff of its neck in the second quarter, booting five goals to the Hawks’ one on their way to a 15.12 (102) to 8.8 (56) victory at Clayton Road Oval. They trailed by a point at the first change before piling on the pain in the second term to take a 27-point lead into the main break. The Hawks limited their opponents in the second half but kicked only four goals against last year’s grand finalists. The visitors had solid contributions across the board with Addison Dew, Gerard Medlen and Nathan Pearce each snagging three goals and Nic Fry chipping in with two. Samuel West, Charlie Morfesse, Kyle Shanahan, Riley Cunningham, Rhys Smith and Brady Hill were crucial in the Cats’ victory, which put them on top of the ladder on percentage ahead of Boddington, who suffered a shock loss to Brookton-Pingelly. After trailing by two goals at the main break, the Panthers went on to notch a 30-point victory over the Eagles at home on Saturday. In front of their home crowd, the Panthers clawed back a 12-point half-time deficit with an eight-goals-to-one second half for a sensational 14.3 (87) to 8.9 (57) win. Kobe Bennell (four goals) and Nicholas Haslam (three) were prolific inside 50 for the home side and Joshua Hughes, Daniel Trevaskis, Joshua Lee, Ryley Conlan, Malachi Bolton and Ezekiel Bolton played key roles in the upset win. Eagles’ Lloyd Padwick booted five goals, taking his tally to 41 for the year, buoyed by Riley Smith, Ben Sherry, Harry Cabalzar, Matthew Sherry and Jacob Schorer. A Riley Holden and Ryan Melvin masterclass inspired Wickepin to a 49-point victory over Wagin on Saturday, maintaining their four-point buffer over four trailing teams. Holden and Melvin bagged five goals each in their 18.9 (117) to 10.8 (68) triumph, to keep third place. Sam Fortini, Melvin, Holden, Joshua Houwen, Kyle Medcalf and Flynn Spark were outstanding for the hosts, while Billy Clay kicked two majors. Cooper Schulz, Thomas Fleay, Tom Keightley, Zac South, Nicholas McMahon and George Gibson were superb for the Bulldogs while Bronson Harry and John Lee kicked two goals each. In the final game of the round, Kurkerin-Dumbleyung handed reigning premiers Katanning their seventh straight loss of the campaign with a consummate 59-point victory on their home turf. Justin Joyce (two goals), Austin Shotter (two), Byron Blevin, Charlie Keast, Jonty Robinson and Jye Depane (one) were brilliant in the win and Coen Marwick kicked three goals. James Laurino, Reece Nicholson, Codie Mills-Durack, Joshua Pinney, Brock Green and Thomas Hamon fought hard for the Wanderers in a tough match.
