WA hospitality labour shortage: Restaurant offers up to $55 per hour for experienced wait staff

A Perth restaurant is dishing up a bumper pay day for people who want to wait tables — a whopping $55 an hour, more than twice the award wage. Dire labour shortages in the hospitality sector have forced Italian fine-dining restaurant Zafferano to take extreme measures to attract staff. The West Perth eatery has placed an advertisement on jobs website Seek offering “experienced”, “highly-motivated” and “well-groomed” wait staff up to $55 per hour. Restaurants and pubs having to fork out more than the award wage of $20-$25 is not uncommon in WA with borders closures effectively cutting off the supply of overseas workers, but the eye-popping offer of more than twice that is out of the ordinary. AHA WA chief executive Bradley Woods said the huge wages on offer were a reflection of the labour crisis that had enveloped the sector as a result of border restrictions. “Staff shortages are having a profound effect on hospitality venues throughout WA and in turn having an inflationary impact on wages, a cost ultimately borne by the customer,” Mr Woods said. “With a date now set for WA’s border reopening, we look forward to welcoming workers back into the State so we can alleviate the significant workforce pressures being felt across WA’s hotels, restaurants, bars and pubs.” In the advertisement, Zafferano says it is a “well-established” restaurant with a “reputation for great food and fabulous service” that is looking for staff with previous fine dining experience. Those who are successful, the ad says, can expect to work around 40 hours a week, including every Friday and Saturday. “This position would fit in well with university commitments, especially since we are just up the road from UWA and weekday shifts can be worked in to suit you,” the ad says. “Applicants need to be well groomed, highly motivated, customer focused and show a passion for food, wine and customer service. “This is not a short-term position. You MUST be available some week days. Friday and Saturdays a definite.” And just last month it emerged one of Sydney’s top restaurants — Rockpool Bar & Grill — was paying dishwashers up to $90 per hour on a Friday and Saturday night because of labour shortages.
