Farmer wins $80m Powerball after ’rough trot’
Australia’s newest multi-millionaire is a farmer from the Port Macquarie region who won last night’s entire $80 million Powerball jackpot.
“This is huge for my family. We’ve been through a rough trot. We’ve been battling the drought for years and were affected by the bushfires earlier this year,” the man said.
The retiree was completely unaware he had the golden ticket until checking his email on Friday morning.
The man, who bought his ticket online and wished to remain anonymous, was overwhelmed by the news after recently battling hardship during last season’s unprecedented bushfires.
“This is huge for my family,” he said.
“We’ve been through a rough trot. We’ve been battling the drought for years and were affected by the bushfires earlier this year.
“This is just going to make my family’s life so much easier.”
He planned to spend part of his prize upgrading to a satellite TV to keep entertained amid coronavirus self-isolation.
Not that he’s too bothered being on his own.
“Actually, I’ve been socially isolating since I retired so I’m pretty good at it,” the man said.
Thursday night’s winning numbers were 14, 21, 16, 12, 1, 29 and 27, with 7 the Powerball.
In addition to last night’s $80 million division one prize, a total of 1,916,815 winners won more than $33.9 million in divisions two to nine.
This is the first time an individual Australian has won an entire $80 million Powerball prize.
