Bystander swims hundreds of metres to rescue woman swept off rocks at notorious Salmon Holes in Albany

A woman had to be rescued by a brave bystander who swam hundreds of metres to save her after she was swept off the rocks at a fishing spot Salmon Holes near Albany. The man, who was at the beach in the Torndirrup National Park, swam out to rescue the woman after she fell into the water at 11.38am. The 29-year-old woman was fishing on rocks and wearing a life jacket, as is mandatory at the notoriously dangerous fishing spot. She was swept out to sea as dozens of onlookers watched in horror from the rocks and nearby beach. Emergency services were called, but a man on the beach came to the rescue, swimming hundreds of metres to the woman. He first swam the woman back towards the rocks where an angel ring had been thrown into the water, but the ring was swept up onto rocks and the man had to swim the woman back to the beach. People on the beach threw out a rope when the pair got closer, and they were dragged back to the safety of the beach. Those watching on clapped the man for his heroics once they were safely ashore. Dozens of police rushed to the scene along with St John WA officers. The woman was treated for minor cuts and abrasions at the scene. Albany Sea Rescue were called and were deploying before the woman was rescued but were stood down. The carpark at Salmon Holes was full of keen fishers on the Easter weekend. After the rescue, people continued fishing off the rocks where the woman went in. A Parks and Wildlife ranger was active at the location, enforcing the mandatory life jackets, and witnessed some of the rescue.
