Jo Hemley earns Shire of Gnowangerup council seat after polling 182 votes for convincing special election win

Jo Hemley, who was born and raised in Ongerup, played sport in Borden and taught in Gnowangerup, won the extraordinary election for a seat on the Shire of Gnowangerup council at last Thursday night’s count. Ms Hemley topped the polling convincingly in a five-way race which was called after insufficient candidates came forward to fill the seats on the original polling date last October. She will be sworn in at the next council meeting on April 22. Ms Hemley did not stand on the scheduled date because she was completing the renovation of her house which had been badly damaged in the earthquake which hit the town in 2023. “I decided I would finish one job before I started another,” she said. “We didn’t lose the house completely, but the walls weren’t terrific and needed a lot of reinforcing. “We spent the last two years rebuilding it and I shifted back in just before harvest.” The area has been plagued with small quakes in the last few months, but Ms Hemley said they did not have her worried. “I felt a couple of them but I’m pretty much inured to them now,” she said. She said she thought she had won the election because she was well known across the shire’s three main towns. “I have been involved with various areas of the community — having three kids means you’re going to be involved — and when they leave home you start looking for the next way to make a contribution,” she said. Her 182 first preferences topped the polling ahead of Timothy Beeck’s 85. Mr Beeck will be the first candidate to backfill with Mel Peucker next in line after receiving 31 first preferences. The other candidates were Lex Martin (17 votes) Colin Starke (16 votes).
