Tambellup hockey star Penny Squibb will begin her Olympic Games campaign on Sunday when the Hockeyroos play their opening match in Paris.

The Hockeyroos will face South Africa in their first pool game on Sunday starting at 6.45pm, with Squibb set to make her long-awaited Olympic debut.

The WA defender was cruelly ruled out of the Tokyo Olympics as the team prepared to fly out after sustaining a leg injury.

Squibb, 31, has worked incredibly hard since that heartbreaking news and was rewarded with selection in the Hockeyroos’ final team for Pairs.

She has made 56 appearances and scored seven goals for her country and will add to her games tally at this year’s Olympic Games with the hockey tournament to take place from July 27 to August 10.

After their opener, the Hockeyroos face Great Britain on Monday at 11pm WA time and then tackle USA on Wednesday at 7.15pm.

The Hockeyroos’ final two pool games will be against Argentina on August 2 at 2.15pm and then Spain on August 3 at 6.45pm.

Quarterfinals in the women’s competition will be played on August 5 and 6 before the semifinals on August 7 and 8.

The gold medal game for the women will be played on August 10, and the bronze medal playoff on August 9.

The Hockeyroos have won three Olympic golds, the last coming memorably in the 2000 Sydney Games in front of their home fans.
