Man accused of throwing axe at moving car hitting female driver at risk of jail term

A Katanning man allegedly threw an axe at a moving car which smashed a window and struck the female driver in the head. Tyron Thomas Williams, 36, has been charged with a series of offences in relation to two separate incidents in July and September. If convicted of what was described by the prosecution as “serious allegations”, Mr Williams would be at risk of a prison sentence. In the Albany Magistrate’s Court last Friday, police prosecutor Sergeant Alan Dean told the court that on July 12, Mr Williams was in Katanning walking in company with a man and woman. “The victim of the offence was driving past and she stopped to speak with the female he was with, the two females got into a physical fight,” Sgt Dean told the court. “It was said while the two females were fighting the accused has put a brick through the windscreen and as the victim has driven away, he’s thrown an axe at the car and it’s gone through the window and struck her to the head.” Mr Williams was charged with criminal damage and endangering the life, health or safety of a person over the July 12 allegations. Sgt Dean told the court that on September 24, Mr Williams attended his father’s house in Katanning, where he again allegedly threw an axe and made threats to kill him. Those allegations led to a charge of threatening to injure, endanger or harm a person. The court was told Mr Williams’ father then went inside the house to get a samurai sword, and confronted his son. After starting to drive away from his father’s house , Mr Williams pulled over a few metres down the road, the court was told. “The accused has got out of the car with an axe and again made threats. The victim has pointed the sword at him, the accused has tried to grab the sword and eventually let go and took off,” Sgt Dean said. Mr Williams later received stitches to his hand. Sgt Dean said though the accused “posed risk to the alleged victim”, bail was considered appropriate. Defence counsel Janie Gibbs told the court her client denied the allegations in both incidents. “Mr Williams said on July 12, his brother was also charged and it is alleged his brother was the one who threw the brick,” Ms Gibbs told the court. “It was late at night, dark — Mr Williams is adamant he was not involved and didn’t throw anything, but told the others to move along.” Ms Gibbs said her client also disputed the order of events from the September incident. Magistrate Dianne Scaddan granted Mr Williams bail with several conditions. He is due to appear at Albany Magistrate’s Court on October 15.
