A dedicated emergency volunteer has been given St John WA’s highest honour for her almost two decades of work helping the people of Jerramungup.
Danielle Wisewould was inducted into the Order of St John this month, with the award presented at an investiture ceremony at Government House on May 9.
Ms Wisewould has been a volunteer at the Jerramungup sub-centre for 19 years, and has served as an operational emergency medical technician, volunteer development officer, chairperson, storeperson and mentor.
“It’s gone really quick actually,” she said. “It feels like it was only the other day I joined.
“I’ve always liked helping people, and at the end of the day I only do it for that, not the accolades.
“It does make you feel pretty good when you do get recognised, but I’m not thinking of that in the back of my mind day to day.”
Alongside her mother being a long-time volunteer, it was an incident in high school that first triggered Ms Wisewould’s desire to join St John, when she had to help a friend having an asthma attack while they were abseiling in Yallingup.
“She didn’t have any medication with her so I called the ambos and had to carry her for about a kilometre and a half to them,” she said.
“I jumped in with her, and on the way to hospital I thought, ‘I could do this’.”
Volunteering is “in her blood” and Ms Wisewould has now convinced her son to join as an emergency medical responder.
“In Jerry, our team is like a family,” she said.
“I know that if I need them, I can call and they’ll be there — it’s my brothers and sisters.”
Her team posted their “massive” congratulations on the sub-centre’s Facebook page.
“Since joining the Jerramungup sub-centre in 2007, Danielle has demonstrated outstanding dedication, leadership and service to our community,” the post reads.
“Danielle has consistently responded to emergencies and supported volunteers with compassion and professionalism through her many roles.
“Danielle has played a pivotal role in volunteer development, community engagement, and the successful renovation of the sub-centre, often contributing countless personal hours to support its growth.”
WA Governor Chris Dawson presented Ms Wisewould with the gong, which represents the highest honour a volunteer or employee can earn.
“For more than 130 years, St John WA has been woven into the fabric of life in our State,” the Mr Dawson said.
“Volunteers and staff answering the call, sometimes dramatically, often quietly. Always faithfully.”
