Hawks re-sign Stewart

Katanning product Kade Stewart has re-signed with premiers Hawthorn for another season after impressing in his first AFL season.

The 19-year-old, who was pick 36 in last year’s rookie draft, has played three games for the Hawks and bagged three goals.

Stewart debuted in round 11 against Melbourne, winning 16 touches.

The left footer from WAFL club South Fremantle told Hawthorn’s website he wanted his footy to do the talking after he was drafted on a one-year rookie contract.

“I was just focusing on this year and seeing what happened,” he said.

“Obviously as a rookie, you get a one-year contract, so I was really focusing on letting my footy do the talking to see where that took me.

“I was really excited to have that opportunity and hopefully I can stay consistent until the end of the year.”

Stewart has also performed well for Hawthorn’s VFL side, Box Hill, kicking 11 goals in 10 matches.

“It’s been really big (this year),” he said.

“Coming from the WAFL and then halfway through the year you’re on the senior list and playing your first game — it has come really quickly.”

Hawthorn recruiting and list manager Graham Wright said Stewart’s hard attack on the ball had held him in good stead. “We’ll retain Kade next year, either as a rookie or potentially he may be upgraded to the senior list at the end of the season,” he said.

“He’s an excellent tackler, hard at the contest and has excellent foot skills and decision making.

“We’ve been really happy with his first year at the club.”
