Sunsmart Lawn Classic hits capacity bookings for first competition on new turf.

Capacity fields hit the courts for the annual Sunsmart Lawn Classic run by Dumbleyung Tennis Club last weekend. Men’s and women’s double matches were played on Saturday, attracting 24 and 14 teams respectively, while 36 mixed-doubles teams competed on Sunday. In the yellow group of the men’s competition, Angus Armstrong and Kyle Angwin prevailed over Stuart Witham and Geoff Stade. Jon Ward and Kim Gooding defeated Nathan Ditchburn and Nathan Toovey in the men’s green group. In the men’s orange group, Lachy Ward and Wade Angwin downed Yogi Bairstow and Scott Angwin. Ben Hall and Sam Allen defeated Uli Glauch and Jamie Frost in the men’s red group. In the women’s division, Michelle Carew-Reid and Carmen Bairstow proved too strong for Deb Doney and Jane Smith, while Amanda Davidson and Carly Smith downed Jodie George and Trish Armstrong in their women’s division. In Sunday’s mixed-doubles event, the pairing of Angus Armstrong and Cara Borthwick were able to win six sets and 36 games over Megan Henry and Matthew Orchord (five sets and 35 games) in the blue group. Jason Eastwood and Jane Smith won the pink group with six sets and 36 games over Megan and Andrew Hemsley on five sets and 30 games. Isabelle and Tom Kilpatrick (five sets and 35 games) prevailed over Claire Carew-Reid and Ethan Caldwell (five sets and 32 games) in the yellow group. Tyler and Jess Caldwell proved too strong in the green group, winning six sets and 36 games over Trevor Eastwood and Julie Ramm on five sets and 35 games. With six sets and 34 games Glauch and Michelle Smith won the orange group over Howie Ward and Clare Atkins. Dumbleyung Tennis Club captain Megan Henry said the event was a great success on their new turf. “To be at max capacity each year is a testament to our club and community,” she said. “It is a real community hub... it is massively successful. “We actually have to turn people away because we don’t have capacity, which is sad. “This is our first proper hit-out for the new turf.” It was the club’s biggest fundraising event for the year and the event included an evening meal on Saturday.
