Diversity celebrated

A testament to Katanning's multiculturalism will soon be flying high, thanks to approval from the Shire of Katanning for the latest Katanning Action Network project.
The Shire has committed a contribution worth $5000 to the Fly My Flag project, which will be a display of national and cultural flags located along the Clive Street side of Lions Park.
KAN community and culture subcommittee chair Carly Vartesi said the initiative, which was designed to represent Katanning's cultures, was born 18 months ago after community workshops to encourage positive change in Katanning.
"The point is to celebrate diversity in Katanning and to show that we are proud of it… and to celebrate our uniqueness," she said. "It is important every town has their identity… it's working towards our mission of change in the negative perceptions of Katanning."
Ms Vartesi said they currently had 12 flags but aimed to have 50 flags to represent Katanning's different nationalities. Shire of Katanning chief executive officer Julian Murphy said the Shire was delighted to support the project.
"Once installed the flag display will contribute to the creation of a vibrant link between the newly constructed Great Southern Highway Roundabout and Katanning's Main Street and will exhibit Katanning's many points of difference," he said.
The Lions Club Katanning treasurer Doug Cherry said the project would be consistent with the Lions international vision.
