The Ashes: Live coverage of Day 3 of the second Test between Australia and England at the Gabba live

Australia moved into a strong position after some poor Egnland bowling and worst fielding on day two but left the door open with their own brain fades on day two.
They lead by 44 runs, with Alex Carey and Michael Neser having the chance to bat England out of the match and potentially the series but England will hope they can run through the tail.

Key Events
Jacks survives!
England’s No.8 Will Jacks nearly departed the middle just as quickly as he arrived.
Australia reviewed a not out caught behind decision but replays showed the ball had come off his thigh pad and avoided his glove.
ENG 6-132
Starc gets Smith!
England are in all sorts now.
Jamie Smith has to go for four after edging Mitchell Starc through to Jamie Smith, with a review not enough to save the wicketkeeper.
If Australia are able to grab another wicket in the 13 minutes before the scheduled close, they may be within their rights to ask for an extra half-hour to bring a result.
ENG 6-128
And he’s away!
Jamie Smith was able to score his first runs of the Test match in quite some style, driving Scott Boland straight back down the ground for four.
But the seamer produced a brilliant response by pulling back his length, sending an inswinger whizzing past his inside edge.
ENG 5-127
Scary for Smith
Nervous times under lights for Jamie Smith, who is still not off his pair.
The England wicketkeeper was bowled by Scott Boland without scoring in the first innings.
ENG 5-123
Boland does Brook with review drama!
That was quite a passage of play!
Scott Boland thought he had the wicket of Harry Brook caught behind, only for a review to shown he had missed the ball by a long way.
But the very next ball, the Victorian was able to induce an edge, which was initially given not out but later overturned after Australia reviewed!
The Victorian well and truly worked over England’s star batter.
ENG 5-123
Shut up shop?
This is not very Bazball of England!
Brook and the new batter Ben Stokes look to be making a concerted effort to get through to stumps, which is just over half an hour away.
ENG 4-123
Root goes, massive moment!
Mitchell Starc strikes again, and it’s the huge wicket of Joe Root!
After breaking his century drought on Australian shores in the first innings, Root has to go for 15 after edging a wide Starc delivery to wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
Not out was the on-field call but both wicketkeeper Carey and captain Steve Smith were certain they had heard something, and were proven right by a massive spike on hotspot following Smith’s review.
ENG 4-121
No Brook for Boland
The next ball after Harry Brook slashed Scott Boland behind point for four, he was pinned on the pads.
Steve Smith opted to review the not out decision, only for ball tracking to show the impact was outside the line of the stumps.
ENG 3-121
Starc returns
Perhaps sensing a key moment in the game, Steve Smith has opted to re-introduce Mitchell Starc into the attack.
After making a brilliant start to the series with both ball and bat, he gave away 36 runs in his first six overs of this innings but looked much more like the man we saw in Perth and the first innings in that over.
ENG 3-115
Game on
England’s two best batters are now at the crease, with Harry Brook joining Joe Root.
If their side is to stage a remarkable comeback, these two will almost certainly need to play a huge role.
