About 1.30am on April 10, emergency services were called to Barrpowell St, Welland, after a man was found unresponsive on the roadway.

Witnesses tried to help Mr Holdback, but he died at the scene.

CCTV footage captured parts of the incident, and police have requested media not show video or play audio to avoid the possibility of prejudicing any future trial.

Police say shortly before his death Mr Holdback had met with two occupants of a BMW sedan in Musgrave St.

“A brief argument occurred and William fled into Barrpowell St where he was fatally stabbed by the passenger of the vehicle,” police allege in a statement on Friday.

“The driver of the vehicle drove the BMW into Barrpowell Street and collected the person who stabbed William and they left the scene.”

That BMW has now been seized.
